SM57 vs SM58
Question
What are the real reasons an SM58 should be used for vocals, and an SM57 be used for instruments? Of course, everybody seems to use these mics as mentioned. No one has given me a convincing reason for this, other than 'That's just what you do- everyone does it this way'. Please ease my anxious mind!
Answer
It is true the SM57 and SM58 microphones are based on the same cartridge design. The main difference between them is in the grille design. The SM58 was designed for vocal application and it uses a separate grille with a very effective pop filter. The SM57 was designed as an instrument microphone where smaller grille size is preferred. In this application the pop and wind are not usually a concern. The SM57 uses an integral resonator/grille assembly, where grille is actually a part of the cartridge. These two grille designs place the diaphragm of the microphones in a different acoustical environment. First of all, the distance from the top of the grille to the diaphragm is significantly shorter on the SM57 compared to that of the SM58. This allows for closer sound pickup with even more pronounced proximity effect. Secondly, a different resonator/grille assembly design of the SM57 is responsible for its slightly higher output above 5 kHz.

You can't beat this mic for the money. In a nutshell, it's just easy to use. Stick it in front of a speaker, take a moment to find the sweet spot and you're set. The presence switch is a great feature, very useful. I like this mic better than an SM57, by a wide margin. It doesn't color your sound as much, it's more natural in my opinion. My only nitpick is the construction. It's very light, doesn't feel very durable. The ring that supports/surrounds the mesh is plastic. You definitely don't want to drop it.

Buy this mic! I've used SM57's and Beta 57's and even the e609 before and have always been just short of what I thought was 'the perfect guitar sound'...until I bought this mic!

Placement is EVERYTHING, but with this you have that AND the dip switch that offers hi-cut, flat or hi-boost to tailor the frequency response to a given situation.

My guitar tone has NEVER been so good! Thanks Sennheiser!

Sennheiser makes the most versitile microphones in the planet. Even their microphones are versitile. This mic works perfectly on things that aren't even listed on their manual. It works perfectly with guitar cabs so you can get some tape and let it hang. Or you can buy a mini boom stand to set a few inches away from your amp. The sound i get is sharp and clean.

I agree with the other reviewers that say it DOES NOT COLOR YOUR TONE!! what you hear is what you get with proper mic placement. I have been using '57's for years like everyone else and wanted to try something else so after a lot of research i settled on the e906.

the filter switch does its job and is very useful for dialing in the tone of various amp & speaker combinations. I find that my guitar tracks sound much more "alive" than they did with '57's. and the off axis noise rejection IS AWESOME. I have recorded with it in our jam space and get it has excellent separation considering the proximity of the drums & other amps. It also is great recording a lower volumes in my apt. No bleed from the in room acoustic sound of the pick hitting the strings or traffic or all the other things that make it a chore to record a real amp at moderate volumes in less than ideal settings.

All in all I think it is a great mic for under $200 that gets very strong clear guitar tones.

I have to say it is amazing. There is no bull about his mic. Electric or acoustic everything is crystal clear and perfect.

I haven't even had the chance to mix the recordings yet!

In the band room it sounds awesome. Unlike many of its competitors (SM57 and 421) It does not color the sound at all. It's representation of what is going on at the cabinet is almost entirely pure.

I purchased this mic to amp my 59 bassman reissue amp into a Bose PAS system. The mic does an amazing job. My bandmate currently uses the Sennheiser 609 and I felt that the 906 produced a better sound that was worth the extra price.
